Handling Off-Price Retailers

Have you ever walked into a Loehmann's, Nordstrom Rack, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, or other off-price retailers and felt completely overwhelmed. Besides learning how to be patient, here are my tips for finding what you want at a great price at stores like these.

1.
First, you want to go to one of these stores on a day where you have NOTHING else going on. Its impossible to sift through clothes and not make a hasty decision when you're running out of time in the store to leave for another appointment. These stores can be overwhelming and the last thing you need is a timeline to get you worked up and lose your cool. Take your time going through racks and circling the store.

2.
Go to a discount store with a plan- Today I am going to buy clothes that I can wear for WORK, SUMMER, BACK TO SCHOOL, A COCKTAIL PARTY, ETC. Or look at your closet and see what's missing, maybe you don't have a blazer that fits well, or trousers, or a great pair of skinny jeans. Decide what it is you REALLY need before going because then when you get to the store, you'll be on a mission, and DO NOT buy items other than that.

3.
Stay basic. Discount retailers will always have clothes that are a few seasons off. Your best bet is to buy things that will definitely stay in style. Don't try to buy things on trend because they won't last in your closet, and you want to have you dollar go as far as possible. Basics include: blazers, trousers, dark jeans, solid color tanks/tees, black dresses, black pumps. Exceptions would include pieces of QUALITY: a leather jacket, silk blouses, designer trousers, a silk-wool peacoat, etc. Solid colors are best.
